Occupation: Real Estate Loan Officer

This month, we're talking to Roger White, one of our Real Estate Loan Officers, about his role and the most important things he recommends people think about when getting a mortgage.
Tell us about your position and what you do.
I am a real estate loan officer with One Nevada. I specialize in doing home loans for purchases and refinances of single-family residences, condominiums, townhouses, and manufactured homes.
How long have you been with the Credit Union?
I have been with One Nevada for just over 10 years now, and have been in the mortgage loan business for XX years. .
Can you walk us through the basic steps of getting a mortgage?
The first step is easier than most people think. We take a loan application over the phone, online, or in person and go over what the member is looking to accomplish; whether it be a refinance, or prequalification to purchase a home. We'll review credit and employment history to see what they qualify for and give options, so they can decide what they'd like to do.
How should someone go about applying for a mortgage with One Nevada?
We can help non-members as well as members prequalify for a mortgage loan. If someone is interested in using One Nevada for their home loan, they'll need to be eligible for membership and become a member prior to closing on their home loan. It's a very easy process. Membership is open to all individual who lives in Clark, Washoe, or Nye Counties.
What are the most critical things a member should have in before starting the home loan process?
The documentation required will vary based on each person's situation. The most critical documents are a recent paystub or retirement awards letter along with two years complete tax returns and W2s.
Can you tell us what sets us apart from other mortgage lenders and what sets our Real Estate Loan Officers apart?
Providing exceptional customer service is always a must at One Nevada. Our processing, underwriting, and closing departments are all in the same office building, which really helps the process move efficiently. Most lenders do not have the luxury of being able to walk over and talk to their processor or underwriter like we do.
Everyone that I work with in the mortgage department truly cares about getting their applicant the best available deal on his or her home loan. There can be rate and fee differences with different mortgage companies that can be thousands of dollars different, and our rates and fees are usually by far the lowest around. I can say that with confidence because I have competed against other loan estimates from financial institutions from all over the country. One Nevada's mortgage department is proud of our reputation for having the lowest rates and fees and best customer service around.
What is the most important thing a buyer should look for when seeking a real estate loan officer?
I think that experience is a necessity. There are so many options out there making it hard to know who to use for your home loan and what type of loan is best for your needs. It's necessary to work with someone that knows all of the options and has the experience to get you the loan program best for you. The most common mistake people make when getting a home loan, is not shopping around to get the best deal. It's important to get several quotes when making a major financial decision, especially when looking for a home loan.
What do you find to be the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part of my job is helping people make positive changes. Whether it's helping someone purchase their first home or upgrade into their dream home. We've also helped people lower their monthly mortgage payment by hundreds of dollars by refinancing their current mortgage to a lower interest rate. Some people refinance to pull cash out to consolidate debt or make home improvements they've dreamed of. It's always a great feeling to know I helped them accomplish life changing decisions.
What do you like to do in your free time? Any hobbies or things you like to do outside of work that you care to share.
Since I work in an office all day, on my days off I really enjoy being outside. On the weekends, you'll probably find me hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, or attending an occasional Vegas Golden Knights hockey game. Go Knights Go!
